Light rains in Delhi

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) Some parts of the national capital experienced light to moderate rains this morning as the mercury remained marginally above normal in the city that has been witnessing heavy showers for the past few days. The rain gauges measured 0.6 mm for a period of 24 hours ending at 8.30 am.

The Met Office has forecast that there are possibilities of light rains during the day in some areas. The minimum temperature has been recorded at 25.6 degree Celsius, three degrees above normal.

A farmers'' rally and residual waterlogging from the previous day caused traffic jams in various parts of the city. According to Delhi Traffic Police, vehicular movement has been diverted on Shantivan-Rajghat bypass while the Hanuman Setu near ISBT has been closed for traffic.

Traffic movement is affected on several routes due to the farmers'' rally, including Ajmeri Gate, Ramlila Ground to Ranjeet Singh flyover, Barakhamba Road, Tolstoy Marg, K G Marg, Janpath and Sansad Marg. Meanwhile, rail traffic has restarted on Old Yamuna Bridge, officials said.

The bridge, which connects north-east Delhi with central parts of the capital, was closed for road and rail traffic yesterday after the water level in Yamuna river rose dangerously. The Yamuna continued to flow above the danger mark as authorities said they were prepared to tackle any eventuality.

The water level, which had crossed the danger level of 204.83 metres on Friday, had touched 205.96 metres last evening. Currently, over 1,400 people are taking shelter in the 169 relief camps set up in various places near low-lying areas near Yamuna in east Delhi.

Around 200 people were evacuated from the banks yesterday.
