At least one killed, dozens injured
SAN FRANCISCO: Dozens of people were injured and at least one person killed in a gas explosion in a residential neighbourhood near San Francisco, news reports said.
Some 30 people were injured and about 20 homes caught fire in the explosion, which occurred around 6 pm Thursday.
A county coroner confirmed at least one fatality, CBS 5 reported.
The blast may have been caused by an underground natural gas pipeline running trough San Bruno, which is located close to San Francisco International Airport, the San Francisco Chronicle said, quoting local utility officers.
Witnesses, many of whom initially believed an earthquake or plane crash had happened, said they heard a loud bang followed by an explosion that shook buildings and an ball of fire shooting into the sky. - dpa
